Messages from Francis
The following comes from our president, Francis Pedneau.
2009 Officers
2009 officers are President Dana Jeffries, Vice President Ray Ramirez, Treasurer Steve Mobley, and Sectartary Francee Graham. Thanks to all of you for stepping up for your club. I know all of you will do a great job. This club is a great organization because of its members.
Christmas Party and Meeting
Our Christmas party is at the Forum Theatre 2:00 to 5:00 PM, December 14, 2008. Bring your favorite dish and a gift valued at $20.00 or less (preferably related to our hobby) for BJ's awful gift exchange game. All guns, knives, and water balloons will be checked in at the door. The club will furnish ham, tri-tip, and punch. If you want something else to drink, please bring it. Service will also be provided by the club.
Work Party
We're having a work party on December 6th 9:00 AM at the shop. Our shop is at the NW corner of Jackson and Whitney Portal Rd. We have two outside storage areas that need to be cleaned up and rearranged. After we have completed that chore, Jim Grandgeorge and I, along with Francee and Jackie and anyone else that wants to go, will go to Dyer, NV. and bring back the rest of the Lou Fritts collection.
With this newsletter I wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
October and November field trips
Ray Ramirez sent us this report.
On Saturday November 22nd Francis, Jim, Linda, and myself revisited Cactus Flat and found the spot we were looking for with the multi-colored onyx, white agate with peach-colored druse, and petrified wood. The weather was perfect and we all went home with a few new treasures. Jim Grandgeorge found the monster 13.8 pound chunk of wood and I found several smaller pieces. The wood has some beautiful colors and I have included a photos of a couple pieces that I polished. There was lots of onyx and agate scattered around the same area and at this time I am not sure how these will polish but I will find out soon hopefully. This location definitely needs revisiting!
The field trip in October was to the Royston turquoise mine near Tonopah Nevada and to the Broken Arrow varicite mine. Turquoise was a little harder to come by on this trip but we still found some real nice pieces and had a great day. Perhaps next trip will better. I have included a few photos of some of the unusual pieces that I polished. What we may have missed out on at the Royston was made up for at the Broken Arrow mine because everyone went home with lots of beautiful varicite! A good deal of it was hard and dark green too!
At this point there is no trip scheduled for December so I look forward to seeing everyone at the Christmas party December 14th.
Shop Nite News
By Jessie Mobley
Shop night was November 11th, at 6:30pm. Francis, Francee, Jim, Jackie, Steve, Jessie and our newest members, Alexis, Chris and Bart attended.
Jackie offered fruitcake to everyone, while Frances gave the new members the grand tour of the rock shop.
Frances and Jim worked on the big saw so Jim could work on his rock. I worked on shaping a piece of turquoise that I had found on the Tonopah turquoise field trip with advice from Jim and Frances.
My dad and I left early, but everybody had a good time.
